I am incredibly happy to report some genuinely good news in the healthcare world today. If you or a loved one are on Medicare and have struggled to get coverage for weight-loss medications like Zepbound (specifically the KwikPen) or Wegovy, this is the update you have been waiting for.
Medicare is officially launching the temporary GLP-1 Bridge Program on July 1, 2026. This program is designed to provide affordable access for beneficiaries whose standard Part D plans do not cover these medications.
Here are the essential facts every senior needs to know:
💲 $50 Copay: Eligible individuals will pay a flat $50 copay for covered GLP-1 medications through this program.
🛑 Outside of Part D: This program is not run by your insurance carrier. It is managed by a central processor for CMS.
🩺 Doctor Action Required: Your doctor must submit a specific prior authorization directly to this central processor starting July 1st to verify eligibility (based on BMI and health factors).
⚠️ TrOOP Note: The $50 copay will not count toward your annual True Out-of-Pocket (TrOOP) limit, but it will dramatically reduce your costs at the pharmacy counter.
This temporary program is set to run through December 31, 2027.
